2025 NBA Redraft what-if scenarios

What if Charlotte had held the first pick?

Knueppel went fourth, led the NBA in threes and finished with more win shares than anyone in the class. Flagg still won Rookie of the Year, 56 first-place votes to 44, and still goes first here, but only just.

What if the second round was where the value was?

Ryan Kalkbrenner went 34th and had the second-most win shares of any rookie. Maxime Raynaud went 42nd, made the All-Rookie Second Team and was the West's Rookie of the Month in March. Both are in this redraft's top ten — 26 and 33 places higher than they went.

What if New Orleans had only had one pick?

The Pelicans came away with Jeremiah Fears and Derik Queen, and both made the All-Rookie Second Team. The redraft keeps both in the first ten.

What if this draft is simply being judged too early?

Every player here has one season behind him. Noa Essengue, the 12th pick, played two games before shoulder surgery ended his year, and Thomas Sorber, the 15th, didn't play at all. Neither is on this board — a year from now, either could be.

How the NBA Redraft Works

  1. Choose a draft year — Every class is loaded into the redraft tool, from recent lottery classes to some of the most debated drafts in NBA history.
  2. Run your redraft — Go pick by pick through all 30 selections, just like a real NBA draft, using career performance instead of pre-draft hype.
  3. Share your boards — See your redraft board next to the actual draft results and share it where you like to see if the world agrees.

Why Use a Redraft Instead of Just Debating It?

Redraft arguments are a staple of NBA Reddit and basketball “pods”, but our NBA redraft tool really tests whether you know “ball”. You have to fill all 30 slots, which means dealing with the awkward middle-of-the-round calls, not just the obvious stars at the top. It’s the difference between saying “they should’ve taken him third” and actually redrafting the entire first round yourself.

NBA Redraft FAQ

What is an NBA redraft tool?

An NBA redraft is a tool that lets you redo a past NBA draft class using hindsight instead of pre-draft scouting reports. Instead of guessing who might be good, you're picking based on who actually was good, letting you rebuild the entire first round the way it "should have" gone.

How does the Draft Time Machine redraft tool work?

Pick any available draft year, then go through all 30 first-round picks yourself. The redraft tool lets you select any player from that class at each slot, then compares your finished redraft board to the real draft results.

Can I redraft any NBA draft class?

Draft Time Machine's redraft tool covers a wide range of draft years from 1996 to present day. You can jump into recent classes or dig into some of the most talked-about redrafts in NBA history. Check the year selector on the tool for the full list currently available.

What are the most popular NBA redraft years?

The most popular redraft years on Draft Time Machine are the classes with their own redraft pages: 1996 NBA Redraft, 2003 NBA Redraft, 2011 NBA Redraft, 2014 NBA Redraft, 2017 NBA Redraft, 2018 NBA Redraft, 2020 NBA Redraft, 2021 NBA Redraft, 2022 NBA Redraft, 2023 NBA Redraft, 2024 NBA Redraft, 2025 NBA Redraft. Each one has the real draft, our hindsight redraft, the top five and the biggest what-ifs, with the redraft tool ready for that year below.

Is this redraft tool based on actual player performance?

Yes and no. The NBA redraft tool is yours to control. Do what you want, build it based on position of need and fit or how a players' careers actually played out rather than how they were originally ranked on draft night.

Why do people use redraft tools?

NBA redraft tools are popular because they turn "hindsight is 20/20" draft debates into something interactive. Instead of just arguing who a team should have picked, you can actually build out the full redraft board yourself and compare it to how others would redraft the same class. You can also test your knowledge of basketball, are you a stats head? Prove it!

Is the NBA redraft tool free to use?

Yes, the redraft tool on Draft Time Machine is free to use, pick a year and start redrafting.

Can I share my redraft board?

Once you've completed a redraft, you can share your board to compare your picks against the actual draft results and see how your redraft stacks up.
